CHANDIGARH: Did you know there’s one road in the city where nobody dares to visit after sunset? The road connecting PGI, en route Dhanas and PU to Sector 25 is surrounded by forest on both sides. There are no functional streetlights here and in case you dare to ride on this 3km stretch at night, it will give you goosebumps.
One can take this stretch if he/she is looking for a quick way to reach Sector 25, Dhanas or PU.
However, this entire stretch is hardly used by any resident during evening time. People prefer travelling from either Khuda Lahora side or from Sector 15 to reach the destination because the stretch has no streetlight and remains completely dark.
When the TOI reporter travelled on this road, neither he could see the road nor the shoes he were wearing.
However, there are a few streetlights near the PGI and Sector 25. But the stretch in between gets completely dark after sunset as there are not a single streetlights pole here.
Rahul Chugh, a resident of this area, said, “After sunset, it becomes difficult to travel on the road as it is completely dark. You cannot even spot the stray animals which roam around and suddenly come in front of your car. At times, wild animals are also spotted.” He also said that the residents of the nearby area are facing inconvenience for a long time.
For VP Singh, it has become a nightmare to drive on this road. “During a foggy weather, the vehicle’s headlight is not enough to get a clear vision. Many persons have escaped accidents on the same road. What is the benefit of these street lights if they are not serving the purpose for which they have been installed?,” said Singh, a regular traveller on this road. That is not all. There are no road signs here, and the daily commuters have approached the civic body to install road signs on this stretch.
Chief engineer MC Chandigarh NP Sharma said, “The matter has been brought to my notice and our team are replacing the bulbs with LED lights. Now if the street lights on that road are not working then we will make them functional by Wednesday.”
Amarvir Kaur, a resident of Sector 25, said, “It is unsafe to travel on this road for any human being living in the area. Our area has become so isolated that now we are afraid to even move out of our premises.”
An electricity department’s top official said, “The conventional streetlights have been repaired and replaced many times. But they don’t last long. Now, we are going to install LED lights in the entire region.”
